Outstanding Academic Success!

Congratulations to Arion Pons following news of his achieving three scholarships in 2011.

Excerpts from Arion's interview (as published in full in the Newsletter):

How many exams did you sit and pass at the end of last year?  Please categorise them into NCEA, Cambridge and Scholarship.
"I sat 20 exams in total at the end of last year, and passed them all, except Scholarship English.  I sat 9 Cambridge exams (Chemistry AS and A2; 5 exams, Physics A2; 2 exams, Maths A2; 2 exams); I sat 6 NCEA exams (Maths w. Calc., Physics, Chemistry, English, Music and Biology).  I also sat 4 Scholarship exams (Maths w. Calc., Physics, Chemistry, English).  Lastly, I sat Grade 7 Music theory exam through our school." ...

When you approach your twilight years, what would you like to know that you have done for New Zealand as a result of your endeavours?
"I would like to know that NZ was just a little bit better because of me - in whatever way.  I have no idea where I'll be in 50 years time, but hopefully I will have made a difference somewhere.  I'd like to get people to appreciate learning and education a bit more, but also to realise that while good grades are great, they're only the means to an end, not the end itself.  In my studies, I hope that end is to do God's will and make a difference somewhere."

de la Cour brothers rock!

At the recent Canterbury Primary and Intermediate Schools' Triathlon last Wednesday, at Pegasus Town, Charlie earned 1st position with Edward following in 2nd.  This is an outstanding effort from both boys considering hundreds of pupils from 78 schools competed in the 75 or 100m swim, a 4.3 km bike ride (or 8.6km for 11 and 12 yr olds) and a 2.5 km run.

A New New Zealand Champion!

Notes from Micah McGoldrick's race report of the 2012 Senior Nationals held in Taupo last weekend.
.....
Taupo race track brings back good memories, having won a junior Championship there before; it put me in a good mind set to win another.  The track itself is one of the best in the country and the Club is known all over the world.  The weather and track was perfect all day which made for some awesome racing."
...
"I was feeling good on the bike and loving the track.  I qualified 1st by over 2 seconds so I was definitely feeling it, and I was ready to go.  Good start to the day."
...
"Last moto of the day and wanting to finish on another high.  Got an okay start and started to make my way to the front of the pack.  I took another win making it 3 out of 3 on the day.
After moto 2, where I sealed the championship, there was a good vibe going through me and the whole team."

We wish you every success in Australia in April, Micah - ride hard!

              NZ Basketball Representative

         Emma Kevern (Yr 12 student)

Late last year Emma Kevern (now Yr. 12) was selected for the New Zealand Under 18 Koru Basketball team. She played in Australia during the holidays and found the competition to be very tough indeed, but reported that she and her team-mates gained a lot from the experience.
